An over sized garage may seem strange, but it is actually fairly common in custom homes today. You can make it oversized by having higher ceilings, more depth, or make the room wider. If you only have a normal size car, this may seem like something that is really not needed in your home. This is completely false. Think about all the great things that will fit now that the garage is larger. You can easily make a work area in there where you can play with all of your tools. Or maybe you are a fashionista and need extra room for clothing. You could easily add shelving so you can pack away your winter clothes during the summer months. Another great thing about an oversized garage is that any car could fit. No matter what type of car you own, whether it is an SUV or a large pick-up truck. A lot of the time, these types of vehicles do not fit well into a standard garage or garage door type. With an over sized one you will never have to worry if your car will fit again.
Do you have any toys you need room for? Maybe you have a boat or jet skis. Most likely, you will not want to have these things sitting outside where they are open to the natural elements. With an over sized garage, you will be able to fit it all inside. Obviously, this also depends on how wide you really make it. Maybe you decide to build an over sized three car garage. You could easily fit one or two cars and possibly a small boat. Boats are usually close to nine feet wide. It may seem crazy to make that much room available in your garage, but it will absolutely look better than having a canopy built to cover it.
Besides the functionality of an over sized garage, it is also great for curb appeal. A larger garage means a larger residential garage door. This will make your home look larger than life. It is perfect if you are going for extravagance. Once you have out grown your home or decide to move, it will be a great selling point that most other homes will not have.
